PLF is a tool that supports the skills and management decisions of the farmers\, veterinarians\, experts and authorities based upon the continuous and automated collection of livestock information. \nThe continuous monitoring of animals\, using PLF technologies in real-time\, where each animal acts as its own control\, is a novel approach not only in livestock and emerging species farming\, but also in companion animals and wildlife monitoring\, for their health and wellbeing. The integrated analyses of “smart data” from individual animals and their environments opens new avenues for the early detection and prevention of diseases\, increased animal welfare and traceability of production\, improved sustainability and farm economics\, at the same time pursuing environmental protection and biodiversity enhancement\, supporting a new societal awareness.
